October 9, 2024 (OTTAWA, ON) – Dominant Information Solutions Canada (DISC), a trusted cyber security partner to the rapidly expanding global space industry, has been recognized at the INNOspace Masters Competition as the winner of the Airbus Challenge ' Boosting responsible Commercialization of Space,' a competition aimed at promoting secure and ethical commercialization of space technologies.
The integrity of data from our satellites is crucial for achieving sustainability targets on Earth. Cyber threats can result in unauthorized access, data manipulation, or even the shutdown of vital environmental systems. These risks can lead to inaccurate environmental data, impede pollution control efforts, and potentially cause ecological disasters.
DISC's tamper-proof, cyber security onboard Intrusion Detection System (IDS) for satellites with ground segment telemetry, eClypse, is receiving international recognition with the help of the INNOspace Masters and Airbus Defense and Space, a leading player in the space industry.
"An estimated 17,000 satellites will be launched into space within the next decade, many of which will not have the appropriate onboard cyber security protection to protect their data from being compromised.” said Nick Scheurkogel, CEO of DISC. "eClypse alerts ground station operators of a hack that could easily go unnoticed. This knowledge then informs what actions are needed to quickly remove the threat and restore the operation of the satellite, minimizing the impact (cost) on the operator."
With the support of Airbus Defense and Space, DISC will be working towards bringing eClypse to a TRL 8 to demonstrate its effectiveness in space.
